October Brings Cooler Air and the Guardian Self Storage Coat Drive
2014 marks the 20th year of the Dutchess Outreach Susan DeKeukelaere Memorial Coat Drive sponsored by Guardian Self Storage. Over the course of 20 years the coat drive has greatly expanded from our original partnership with Dutchess Outreach having 2 or 3 distribution sites. We now distribute through Dutchess Outreach at 7 sites, through the Orange County Office of the United Way and also through the People’s Place in Kingston. Last year over 5,000 coats were collected in Dutchess County, 2,500 in Orange County and 500 in Ulster County. This year, we plan to increase that number!
With the cool temperatures rolling in, remember that there are many local families unable to keep warm. We need your help in our continuing efforts to keep help them get warm and stay warm this winter! Adult and children’s winter coats and jackets, especially plus sizes, that are clean and in good condition are being collected at every Guardian Self Storage location across Dutchess, Orange, and Ulster counties. We are also collecting fleeces, hats and scarves!
Dutchess Outreach had these kind words to say about our efforts:
“For twenty years Guardian Self-Storage has sponsored our annual initiative, now called the Susan DeKeukelaere Memorial Coat Drive, to ensure thousands of people and children in Dutchess County have a coat to keep them warm in winter. During that time, 70,000 coats have been collected and given away. That many coats, if laid out side by side along Route 9, would stretch from Poughkeepsie to Beacon and back again! That’s quite an accomplishment; congratulations and thanks to all who make it possible.”
The amount of families this coat drive has kept warm over the past 20 years is truly humbling and we plan on continuing this effort for many years to come! For more information on the coat drive and our drop off sites, please call (800) 698-NYNY.
