Welcome to part two of a five-part mini series featuring tips and tricks from our very own moving experts – Guardian Self Storage Property Managers. Our second part will feature their tips and tricks about moving, which we all know can be a stressful, chaotic time. Whether you’re moving down the street or across the country, their insight can help you have a stress-free, organized move. Without further ado, here are the tips and tricks!

Preparing for the move:
Be as prepared as possible, pack everything you won’t be using before the move (any knick knacks, home décor, or any items not for everyday use) in a timely matter so as to not be rushed or as stressed on moving day. Start with the closets and box up everything and return it to the closet to be out of the way but organized for your move

Wear comfortable sneakers, dress light, drink lots of water and use blankets when moving heavy items.

Make check lists to keep you organized.

Renting a truck with us is easy, but finding some help to do the move might be tough. By renting our truck and getting some help from family or friends your move will be less stressful and faster!

Have plenty of time and be organized. When you rush you may make mistakes and damage belongings.

Separate your belongings into sections and sort into piles to keep and use, keep and store, and donate.

Make the move easier on your body by using moving aids such as forearm forklifts, hand trucks and dollies.

Using a Moving Company:
Do your homework for movers.

When getting an estimate from a moving company, don’t forget about items in your attic, basement, garage, and any outdoor items such as patio furniture, BBQs, etc.

Make sure to line up your mover plenty of time in advance. Most people run in to a big problem waiting until the last minute then get stuck having to do it themselves. Try to book your move during a weekday if possible as some movers discount for that and their availability is much better, especially small, private movers. Make sure to give the movers as much detail as possible regarding steps, multiple floors, and specific locations for depositing your boxes and furniture to ensure you get an accurate estimate and there are no surprises. Get in writing the details such as if gas and tolls will be covered and any other extras that may be incurred. Being prepared will save a lot of headaches in the long run!

If you need movers and need recommendations, call any of our offices. We will give you names and phone numbers of movers that our customers have used. If you’re moving items yourself, rent our 14-foot box truck loaded with free to use of moving blankets, hand truck and easy loading ramp.

Moving into storage:
If moving into a storage room or putting items in the truck, always pack what is not needed toward the back. Some people pack the truck or the storage room as they unpack the house, which can make access to necessary items more difficult.

Pack the truck opposite of how you want the unit to be packed.

Well, there you have it, moving tips and tricks from our experts! Stay tuned for part three when our Property Managers will share more of their insights and pro tips on how to best store your items!
